I Won't Be Dead Until I Die!

I Won’t Be Dead Until I Die

(In Loving Defiance)

I won’t be dead until I die—

don’t send the hearse just yet.

The Good Lord’s got the final say,

and He ain’t called it yet.

I’ll sleep when I am good and gone,

when stars can’t hear me shout.

But now I’ve got some songs to hum

and punchlines to toss out.

You gotta live while you’re alive—

not fade, not stall, not pout.

Some folks clock out at forty-five

and just forget to check out.

Let others moan, “You’re acting young!”

I’ll raise my glass and grin.

I may not have the knees I had,

but I still jump right in.

I’ll mow the devil’s backyard lawn

and dance when I’m inclined.

If that’s not sane, then fine by me—

I’m proudly misaligned.

And Yogi said it best, I think:

“It ain’t over till it’s done.”

So while I’ve got a breath to spend,

I plan to have some fun.

So mark me “still in play,” my friend.

Don’t waste a long goodbye.

I won’t be dead until I die—

and even then, I just might try.
